Section II - Course Following Information

A. Roads

Only through public roads are used in this rally. Driveways, parking lots, private roads and roads with gates across them do not exist and should be avoided. Other non-existent roads are illegal entries and roads marked "NO OUTLET", "DEAD END", "ROAD CLOSED", "NO THRU STREET", etc. Roads which clearly end in a garage, plant, plant entrance or similar areas also do not exist. The only exception to this rule will be the parking lots at the start and finish, the end of odometer calibration leg, and breaks. Anything that does not exist cannot be considered for any purpose. The following variations in road designations are immaterial: (1) Spacing of words in a name; (2) Unless otherwise specified, designation of a route name or number as US, County, State, Interstate, East, Alternate, etc.

B. Speeds

The speeds assigned in the route instructions are average speeds measured in miles per hour. The speeds will normally be at or close to the posted speed limit. However, if the assigned speed exceeds the posted speed limit, obey the posted speed limit. There will be ample opportunity to legally eliminate any time lost due to the difference in speeds.

C. Performance of Instructions

Instructions are performed at the first opportunity. When an instruction includes multiple actions, the order that the actions are to be performed is the order in which the actions are indicated in the instruction.

When an official mileage is given in the left hand margin of an instruction, the mileage applies to the first course-following action for course following instructions or the first action point for non-course following instructions. The mileage is a condition of performance of the applicable portion of the instruction. The mileage is recorded in 1/100 of a mile and is based on the rallymaster's mileages which were recorded in truncated 1/100 of a mile.

On occasion a crew may encounter rally cars approaching from the right, left or from straight ahead. This is not necessarily an indication of being off-course.

D. Course Following Priorities

At each intersection, the correct course is determined by executing the lowest numbered priority applicable from the following list:

1. Execute an Emergency Instruction (See Section H below)
2. Execute an active Numbered Route Instruction (NRI)
3. Execute an active Lettered Route Instruction (LRI)
4. Proceed Straightest As Possible (SAP)

Some actions in route instructions are not intended in any way to direct a course of travel. Such non-course-following actions shall be executed when their minimum conditions are met without regard to the above course-following priorities. This means that it is possible, at one intersection, to simultaneously execute a course-following NRI (e.g. Left at Branded Rd) and a non-course following action of a LRI (e.g. Pause 0.5 minutes at Cookie St).

E. Numbered Route Instructions (NRI)

Numbered Route Instructions will be printed and begun in numerical order. The action point marking the beginning of a numbered instruction will be beyond the action point marking the beginning of a previously begun numbered instruction. Unless otherwise specified, by the phrase "MAY OVERLAP", each NRI must be completed prior to beginning the next NRI. NRI's can overlap LRIs.

F. Lettered Route Instructions (LRI)

Lettered Route Instructions become active upon completion of the previously listed Numbered Route Instruction. LRI's remain active until deactivated by execution of the action CANCEL in a Route Instruction, or in the official information of a checkpoint slip. It is possible to cancel an LRI that is not presently active and an LRI may be canceled more than once. An active LRI may be executed once, more than once, or not at all. Active LRI's can overlap NRI's or other LRI's. A LRI cannot overlap itself, it must be completed prior to being initiated again.

G. Signs and Objects

Material in quotation marks refers to information obtained from a single sign. The quoted material may refer to all or only a portion of the material on the sign. Spelling of quoted material must be accurate; word spacing must be correct; case and type font are irrelevant. Punctuation, which includes the hyphen, may or may not be accurate. The order of the quotation will be in accord with the obvious intent of the erecting agency. Each word or number will be quoted in its entirety. No data that falls within the quoted material will be omitted.

It will not be necessary to look backward to see any referenced sign, object, or sign identifying an object. If separate signs are mounted on the same post or structure, they are considered individual, separate signs. The following will not be used or considered: items on signs that are clearly not part of the erecting agency's intent (such as graffiti, holes, or political advertisements), signs painted on the road surface, numbers or letters identifying utility poles, materials on mailboxes or tombstones, actual animals or vehicles, and signs located on animals or vehicles.

H. Emergency Instructions and Emergency Signs

Emergency instructions will be posted on an emergency sign if the official lead car detects some problem on the rally course such as, a key sign down or missing, a detour, or something that would interfere with a contestant's ability to follow the rally course. A sample emergency sign will be on display at registration.
